For years I thought Robert Palmer the rock star and Robert Palmer the Rolling Stone magazine music critic were the same person. In my defense there were some similarities. Similar in age they both died at early ages, not that far apart. Another similarity you should know about – a love of the blues. Robert Palmer the rock star played with Vinegar Joe before his rise to stardom – more on that another time. This post is about Robert Palmer the respected Musicologist and possibly his most lasting legacy, a book belonging in any blues lovers library, Deep Blues: A Musical and Cultural History of the Mississippi Delta
.

I always enjoyed Robert Palmer’s reviews and commentary in Rolling Stone Magazine but his book will be his lasting legacy. There’s a DVD too and while there are obvious benefits to the video content in this subject – you’d be missing a real treat not to read the book.
