Charlie Patton – Father of Delta Blues!

Electrically Recorded !

If blues started somewhere it was probably with Charlie Patton – 1891-1934. I love Charlie Patton and the simple sound of early (maybe the first) delta blues . Think how progressive this must have sounded in the 1920! Charlie Patton was a pioneer of delta blues and who knows, maybe that is where blues started. Start looking into Charlie Patton and you’ll find statements like “Father of Delta Blues”, “personally inspiring just about every Delta blues man (Palmer, 1995) and “possibly the first rock and roller”!

Apparently Charlie played guitar behind his back, behind his head and laying flat in front of him and liked to put on quite a show. Maybe Jimi got that from somewhere?

For collectors there’s one big ticket item you may consider. Screamin’ and Hollerin’ the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton. I love the first comment on Amazon about this collection – “This is the musical equivalent of a family Bible. You will pass it down from children to grandchildren.” Well put!
For the rest of us there are some great cds so we can all enjoy Charlie’s work including a tribute album “Down the Dirt Road – Charley Patton Tribute” for those of use who have trouble with the electrical recorded versions (LOL).

Here are some samples of Charlie’s work – enjoy.
