Son Seals played Chicago blues complete with trumpet, trombones and saxophones. He didn’t leave us many albums but what he left was great. Son Seals won the Blues Foundation album of the year award 3 times (’85, ’87 and 2001) but still lacks the recognition he deserves. This may be The man had reasons to sing the blues. He lived longer than 13 of his siblings, lost a leg to diabetes and was shot in the jaw by his wife – man if that wouldn’t give you the blues. Three albums really stand out in my mind from the Son Seals Legacy. His debut album, The Son Seals Blues Band, which was reissued after Midnight Son
which brought on the spotlight that shone so bright during his career and then Lettin’ Go which brings a chill to my spine. Maybe Lettin’ Go
was some kind of message, the eerie cover with the man sitting alone, the starkness of the image showing his lost leg in contrast to other album covers always showing him standing on stage and it is also his last album.
Alligator Records is a great blues label with lots more to say about Son Seals than you need to hear from me. Son Seals was a Chicago blues musician that deserves the attention of any blues fan – wish he was still here with us. Here’s a little taste of Son Seals for us all to remember him by.
